The Iron Ball (Japanese: くろいてっきゅう Black Iron Ball) is a type of held item introduced in Generation IV. It grounds the holder and lowers its Speed.

Effect

Held item

The Iron Ball halves the holder's Speed and makes it grounded. Due to being grounded, it becomes susceptible to damaging Ground-type moves; Rototiller; Arena Trap; the entry hazards Spikes, Toxic Spikes and Sticky Web; and terrain, even if it is Flying-type, has either the Ability Levitate or Eelevate, or is under the effect of Telekinesis or Magnet Rise. An Iron Ball does not prevent Magnet Rise or Telekinesis from being used successfully.

Generation IV

If held by a Flying-type Pokémon, it takes 1× damage from Ground-type moves if its secondary type is not weak to or resists Ground-type attacks.

Even if the holder has Klutz or is affected by Embargo, its Speed is still halved by the Iron Ball.

Generation V onward

If held by a Flying-type Pokémon, it takes 1× damage from Ground-type moves, regardless of its other types. This does not apply during Inverse Battles or if the holder is grounded by any other effect.

All of the effects of the Iron Ball are negated by Klutz, Embargo, and Magic Room.

Bag item

When fed into the Cram-o-matic, it is a Steel-type ingredient that gives 16 points towards the output value.

It lowers Speed and allows Ground-type moves to hit Flying-type and levitating holders. PE SwShBDSPLA An item to be held by a Pokémon. It lowers Speed and allows Ground-type moves to hit Flying types and holders that are levitating. SV An item to be held by a Pokémon. It lowers the holder's Speed stat and makes the holder vulnerable to Ground-type moves even if it is a Flying type or is levitating. Champs Halves the holder's Speed stat. If the holder is off the ground, it will be grounded, meaning it can be affected by Ground-type moves, as well as the Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web statuses.

Diamond & Pearl arc

Diamond and Pearl found an Iron Ball amongst the metal items drawn out of the ground in Celestic Town by the magnetic field from Cyrus's Magnezone. It later appeared as an item that was used in conjunction with Lax's Fling in Platinum's Gym battle against Fantina in Mirages of Mismagius II.

Trivia

• The Iron Ball enables Fling to reach its highest base power of 130. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, this status is matched by TR43 (Overheat) and TR71 (Leaf Storm), which contain moves with 130 base power. Starting from the same games, Big Nugget also shares this status.
• In Pokkén Tournament, if the chosen character is Machamp, sometimes it will throw two Iron Balls three times before the fight begins.
